Newark's Newly-Appointed Archbishop Joseph Tobin Elevated to Cardinal by Pope Francis

Newark's newly-appointed Archbishop Joseph Tobin is one of the Church’s seventeen new cardinals from fourteen nations.  In today's ceremony at St. Peter Basilica in the Vatican, the new cardinals took an oath of fidelity to Pope Francis and his successors.  Archbishop Tobin and the other new cardinals, one by one, approached and knelt before Pope Francis who gave each of them a three-cornered red hat, a cardinal’s ring and a scroll attesting to their appointment as cardinals and containing their “titular church” in Rome. The assignment to a Roman diocese church is a sign that they now are members of the clergy of the Pope’s diocese.  Cardinal Tobin's titular church is titular church of Santa Maria delle Grazie a Via Trionfale.
