CARDINAL-ELECT JOSEPH TOBIN NAMED 6TH ARCHBISHOP OF NEWARK

Cardinal-elect Joseph W. Tobin of Indianapolis has been appointed the Sixth Archbishop of Newark, succeeding retiring Archbishop John J. Myers. In Msgr. Tim’s words, “Our new shepherd will receive his ‘red hat’ on November 19 in Rome, at a consistory held as the Year of Mercy concludes. It is a distinct honor for the Archdiocese, among the ten largest in our country, to be headed by a cardinal: it means that the Church in New Jersey may have a voice, when the need may arise, in the conclave to elect Pope Francis’ successor. As we wish Archbishop Myers a blessed retirement, please join me in assuring Cardinal-elect Tobin of our prayerful support.”

At the Monday, November 8 Press Conference announcement and introduction of Cardinal-elect Tobin, the Cardinal-elect said that the criterion on which he wants to be judged is on “whether I led the people to a deeper love of Jesus who is the merciful face of God. . . leading to an ever greater love, knowledge and faith in Christ.”  Let us ponder these words and commit ourselves personally to helping him achieve this.

Cardinal Tobin will be installed as Archbishop of Newark on January 6, 2017.

We highly recommend listening to the Press Conference as little, if any, of Cardinal-elect Tobin’s message to us is included in the local media coverage of the Press Conference.
