In a December 6 letter to the people of the Archdiocese, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin announced that he is engaging Catapult Learning, LLC, a nationally recognized provider of educational services, to assess and, if necessary, re-engineer components of the Lighting the Way Catholic Schools initiative begun by the Archdiocese in 2014. Lighting the Way created a bold strategic plan which has as its goal to "ensure a vibrant Catholic Elementary System of stable Catholic Schools." This plan made radical changes to the way our elementary schools are administrated, moving fiscal and managerial oversight from local parishes to an Archdiocesan education office.
This proposed assessment was prompted by comments and requests raised at pastoral visits and deanery town hall gatherings and a subsequent review of the state of the Archdiocese's Catholic elementary schools by Cardinal Tobin. In his December 6 letter, the Cardinal says that while many good things have been accomplished by Lighting the Way, for instance, "not one elementary school has closed and approximately one-third of our schools have earned National Blue Ribbon Schools designation, a distinction given to only a small number of schools annually" it makes sense to assess the progress to make sure that "we are doing the right things, and doing them right."
