ADULT FAITH SESSIONS 2023 – 2024

EXPLORATIONS IN FAITH AND SPIRITUALITY

Calendar

Hello, friends and parishioners.

Our 2023-2024 season of Explorations in Faith and Spirituality are underway.  The sessions will take place in St. Michael’s, Cranford on Tuesdays of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks (usually, but not always; see Calendar via link above) at 12:45 and 7:30 PM in the Parish Center.

We have chosen content for the first few sessions; however, it is not cut in stone because we would like a chance to hear how past session have helped you find insight and joy for the living of your everyday life in the fullness of your faith.

Below is a list of most of the topics we have discussed in past years with directions to review the list before the session. We would like to hear from you at the beginning of the session, telling us which of the topics helped you the most and why. We promise to take your insights to heart and pray that knowing what you share will help in the selection of this year’s material.

The food for thought for first session will be the 2019 American drama film The Sound of Steel directed and co-written by Darius Marder and the book Last Testament, a 2016 interview of the Pope Emeritus who resigned in 2013 and died in 2022. The Amazon summary:

In interviews with Peter Seewald, the Pope Emeritus breaks his silence on corruption within the Vatican, clerical sex scandals, and the challenge of reforming the Papacy. In these interviews, Benedict discusses such wide-ranging controversies as:– The “Vatileaks” case in which his butler leaked some of his personal letters that alleged corruption and scandal in the Vatican– The presence of a “gay lobby” within the Vatican and how he dismantled it– His alleged Nazi upbringing– His attempts at cleaning up the “dirt in the church” (clerical sexual abuse)– The mysterious private secretary “Gorgeous George”

On a more personal level he writes with great warmth of his successor Pope Francis, who he admits has a popular touch, a star quality which Benedict himself has lacked. Much controversy still surrounds Pope Benedict’s Papacy–in this book he addresses these controversies and reveals how at his late age, governing and reforming the Papacy and particularly the Vatican, was beyond him.
There is a lot of material for discussion in both the video and the book. We think you will enjoy the sessions and find a lot of food for thought and prayerful reflection.
We have, and will use in the sessions, a video summary of the abovementioned movie and an Audible version of the Pope Benedict book. The book is available on Amazon.
A hint about the movie / spoiler alert: It is about a drummer who loses his hearing and is determined to get his pre-hearing-loss life back on track. After a much too long period of time working on doing this, he realizes that the life without sound that he has been fighting to overcome is a better life than the sound-filled life that he was enjoying, building and maintaining. Isn’t that what many of us do: spend our days building the life we think is full of everything we want and need, all the while oblivious to the richer, more joyful life and world that God has been offering us? (There are several summary videos online.)
I look forward to our being together again.
All are welcome! So, please encourage your friends to come, even if they can come only once in a while. It would be nice to have more people in the evening sessions.
The sessions will take place in St. Michael’s, 40 Alden St. Cranford on Tuesday at 12:45 and 7:30 PM in the Parish Center (Use the Tower Entrance on Miln Street.) Both sessions will be on the same topic.  Most sessions will be during the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks of September through May, but not always, so please consult the above online calendar.
