JESUS KNOWS WE WORSHIP, YET WE DOUBT

“The eleven disciples went to Galilee,
to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.
When they all saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.
Then Jesus approached and said to them,
‘All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.
And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.'” Matthew 28: 16-20

“When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.”  – a hint that the first disciples were like the honest and humble disciples of today. Yes, we too know our doubts and our unworthiness:  at our baptisms we promised to be God’s disciples and yet. . . . .

Jesus’ reply is reassuring. He chooses not to focus on this, perhaps to tell us not to fear it.  Instead, Jesus reminds us of His power and His unwavering call to us to be His disciples:  All power is in Me; go and make disciples of all nations. I am with you always.

Let us gather this weekend in the presence of this God who entrusts to us, a worshiping yet doubting community of disciples, the awesome responsibility of being humble, honest channels through which God’s merciful love is flowing into every neighborhood of today’s world.
