SEEING DEEPLY IN A SHALLOW WORLD

The crowd got into their boats and went looking for Jesus.  When they found Him, He said to them, ‘You are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled.’” John 6:24, 26

Jesus warns us, His disciples, that even though we are present and capable of seeing the signs contained in the multiplication of the loaves and the fishes, we only experienced what we are concentrating our attention on.  What am I “concentrating my attention on”? Is it just the physical, the low hanging fruit, of what was happening?

Everything about our day is spiritual as well as physical. The Eucharist physically looks like a host, just a piece of bread, but it is Jesus. Why? Because the Person who has the Power and the Love for us wanted and still wants that to happen!

What does that mean to us and for us now and as we go forth? What impact does this have on our lives, on our perceptions and connections in the events and the people around us?

Life is so much sweeter, so much more alive, when we take the time and make the effort to do as Jesus asks:  see the signs of God’s presence in the Eucharist and in the people and events of our everyday lives.

As we gather for Mass and as we go forth from Mass, let us take time and make efforts to see the “signs” of God in the hours and minutes of our days – every day, not just on Sunday.
