THE BEST SUPER BOWL EVER

“The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer,
you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am!
If you remove from your midst
oppression, false accusation and malicious speech;
if you bestow your bread on the hungry
and satisfy the afflicted;
then light shall rise for you in the darkness,
and the gloom shall become for you like midday.” Isaiah 58:8-10

I like watching football more than any other sport. Even though some people see it as one of the more brutal sports, I saw beauty in it. I never stopped to consider why, until I recentlyheard a sports commentator’s response to Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts’ comment that the team was going to watch their perspective playoff opponents’ game together. This led me to realize that before a great team does something great together, they have to put in a lot of time and effort to become something together.

That’s supposed to be our story as Christ’s Disciples’ story, too: it’s why God made the world and made us – to become something together with Jesus as our head coach, with all of us: each other, deceased, living and to come, “clicking,” cooperating, blocking the chaos and evil around us, passing God’s loving graces to others, receiving those graces and using them to carry God’s team to the end zone – caring for those who are injured, rejoicing with those who are successful. Our praying is our working with our coaches – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – and our trainers – the saints, including those closest to us, friends and family, living and deceased. Together we, the Church of today, are the team of disciples playing hard, in the midst of a lot of evil forces in our towns, countries and culture, to establish the Kingdom of God in the here-and-now, and to go on and last forever and ever.
